Helping future of woodland

A new eco-group has been launched, dedicated to preserving one of Telford’s most popular spots for dog walkers and family picnics.

Residents living near Apley Woods at Leegomery have joined up to form the Friends of Apley group and have been working tirelessly to transform the woodland and safeguard it for future generations.

The former car park - which was closed due to alleged antiƐsocial behaviour taking place there - has already been transformed by new features and the planting of trees.

Other improvements carried out so far include the building and adding of cleft fencing to protect areas of bluebells and snowdrops, re-laying stone paths, pool clearing, tree planting, woodland thinning and putting up nest boxes.

Adrian Corney, environmental officer for Telford & Wrekin Council said: “I worked closely with local residents who were keen to see this important woodland park receive a bit more TLC and appropriate management to cope with the increasing number of visitors.

“The long term aim for the site is to improve both the habitat value of the wood to wildlife while making it a more attractive and accessible place for people to visit.

“Key to this is the forming of the Friends of Apley group whose aim is to help protect and develop Apley Woods as a valuable amenity for the local community, promote it for the observation and study of nature conservation.”

Volunteers meet on a monthly basis and details of forthcoming working parties can be obtained from Adrian Corney on (01952) 384723.
