Cancer hope by candlelight

Families affected by cancer will get the chance to remember loved ones during a candlelit ceremony in Telford aimed at raising vital funds for charity.

Families affected by cancer will get the chance to remember loved ones during a candlelit ceremony in Telford aimed at raising vital funds for charity.

Members of the public are invited to go along to Oakengates Leisure Centre on May 24 for the highlight of Cancer Research UK’s Relay for Life.

The event brings together the whole community in one location for 22 hours to celebrate the strides being made to beat cancer.

Up to 150 people are expected to take part, taking in turns to walk, run, skip or crawl around a track in a relay following an opening “lap of honour” by cancer survivors.

But those who cannot attend for the whole event will still get the chance to take part in the Candle of Hope ceremony, which begins at 8.30pm at the athletics track on the same day.

The ceremony is the most poignant part of Relay for Life when specially made Candles of Hope decorated with touching messages in memory or celebration of loved ones, are filled with sand and lit up around the track.

After a minute’s silence, the bags will be displayed to form the word ‘hope’ before being rearranged to spell the word ‘cure’.

Donations can be made and candles decorated from noon on the day.

Sarah Haugh, Relay for Life chairman, said: “The Candle of Hope ceremony is a poignant reminder of why everyone has come together during relay. We all have the same vision of turning hope into a cure.”
