Telford & Wrekin’s new mayor has pledged to support the borough’s youngsters during his year in office.
Councillor Bob Groom took over at Telford & Wrekin Council’s annual meeting last week at Oakengates Theatre.
He said he never dreamed that one day he would become mayor of the town where he grew up.
“Being elected as the Mayor of Telford & Wrekin, it’s the greatest honour in my life,” he told the meeting. “I’ve an exciting year ahead of me but, in one respect, it’s going to be a very difficult year.
“Councillor Miles Hosken has been a truly magnificent ambassador for this authority. If I can maintain the standards he’s set, I will be a very proud man.”
Councillor Groom is married with three children and has seven grandchildren. He worked at GKN Sankey as an engineer and for 19 years at the then Wrekin Council.
In 2003, he became an elected member, representing Wrockwardine Wood and Trench Ward, being re-elected last year.
He said he wanted to direct his mayoral fund towards helping small local charities and organisations working with the borough’s youngsters.
“I believe Telford & Wrekin’s future rests on our children and young people and I’m committed to promoting the work of charities in this area.”
Councillor Groom said Telford had become a great place, with a great past and an even greater future.
