Bulldozers set to start work soon in Madeley

Bulldozers will move onto the site of a multi-million pound revamp scheme in Telford’s Madeley centre next month.

Bulldozers will move onto the site of a multi-million pound revamp scheme in Telford’s Madeley centre next month.

The work to demolish the old centre to make way for the new development, including a new supermarket, was due to start earlier this month but faced delays.

Contractors for the Tesco development, Bomer Kirkland, are expected to move demountable units on to the site during the week beginning June 2 before the main works begin during the week of June 9.

Councillor Eric Carter, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “I really welcome this scheme that will not only bring a new supermarket to the area, but also new shops and much-needed new housing.

Modern

“It will also transform Madeley’s centre and remove the out-of-date shopping centre and replace this with one that is modern and opens the High St area up again to pedestrians and other traffic.

“We look forward to working with the developers and Tesco to ensure the smooth delivery of this long-awaited project and will be encouraging them to work closely with the community and to keep them fully informed as this major regeneration progresses.”

The Tesco store will replace the former Co-Op supermarket, along with six new retail units with flats above them.

The short delay earlier this month was caused by planning queries over materials being used in the development.

A link road will also be created in the first phase, along with a new library entrance and car park on the site of the old industrial unit.

Commitment

Councillor David Wright, Madeley ward member, said: “This massive investment by the private sector in partnership with the council underlines our commitment to the regeneration of our towns and district centres across the borough.”

Phases two and three will see a new shopping precinct, work at Anstice and Russell Squares and a new Tesco store.

Councillor Wright said: “These are very exciting times for the Madeley community, residents and future visitors.”
