Anger over posters ban

A row is erupting over a decision by the borough council to ban local parish and town councils from putting up posters advertising community events.

Earlier this month, Oakengates Town Council was ordered to rip down £120 worth of posters by bosses at Telford & Wrekin Council - whose event they were promoting.

Now furious Hadley & Leegomery Parish Council has been told it cannot advertise its annual Parish Day on July 6.

Until recently, posters advertising not-for-profit community events were permitted, as long as the borough council vetted them first. But now the council says it is withdrawing that policy as promoters have not abided by the guidelines.

A spokesman said: “In the past we have set out guidelines for posters that are designed to promote church fetes, parish days, town shows and so on.

“We have also asked to vet the text on these posters to make sure they do not promote any commercial organisations.

“Sadly promoters have not been willing to abide by the guidelines, so we no longer offer this facility.”

Pat Smart, chairman of Hadley & Leegomery Parish Council accused the council of being “heavy-handed.”

“As well as parish and town councils, they are penalising small, voluntary groups who are trying to raise funds in their local areas,” she said.

Katrina Baker, secretary of Wrekin Area Committee of Shropshire Association of Local Councils said talks were underway and she hoped a compromise could be reached.
