Sporting event is a major success

A sporting event which brough together hundreds of young people has been hailed as a huge success by the organisers.

Youngsters, many of them from Telford, gathered at RAF Cosford for the 10th annual youth games on Saturday.

Fifty-one teams from the districts of Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin competed in eight different sports including tag rugby, netball, hockey, badminton, rounders and table tennis.

The Shropshire Youth Games is the biggest sporting event in the county and gives young people of all ages and abilities the chance to participate in a wide variety of sports and activities.

The aim of the event is to provide a safe, high quality environment for participants and for spectators and volunteers to enjoy a positive experience and develop a lifelong involvement with sport.

All of the teams performed extremely well on the day, but this year the overall competition winners were Team South Shropshire.

Team Bridgnorth was also highly commended for their performance on the day when they were presented with the Dr William Penny Brookes Fair Play Award which is given to the team that showed the best sportsmanship on the day.

Chris Child, partnership manager for Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, the County Sports Partnership said: “The Shropshire Youth Games is a true team event and would not have been possible without the dedication of the organisers and valuable support of the many volunteers, officials, teachers, coaches and parents.

“We hope that the 10th Games will encourage young people to continue their involvement in sport - either as participants or volunteers.

“Equally as impressive was the engagement of all the young people and the standard and level of skill throughout the day. All participants should be proud of their performances as both team members and individuals.”

The Shropshire Youth Games is organised by Shropshire County Council’s Sport & Recreation Service, together with support from district sports development officers, and in partnership with Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, the County Sports Partnership.
