Drivers face delays

Motorists are facing more than a month of traffic delays and diversions when bridge maintenance work gets under way at a major junction.

The work will start on August 4 on three bridges at the Hollinswood Interchange and will see each of them resurfaced and the bridge deck waterproofings and joints replaced.

Councillor Steve Bentley, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “While some disruption may be caused to drivers during these works, I ask residents to be patient and understand that this work is essential to the safety and maintenance of borough roads.

“We would advise drivers to allow extra time for their journeys and follow diversions where marked.”

The work will be carried out in two phases and will start with the full closure for two weeks of Hollinswood North Bridge between the A442 northbound on, and the southbound off, slip-roads.

Hollinswood South Bridge will then be closed from Monday 18 August for two weeks between the A442 southbound on, and northbound off, slip roads.

Sections of the roundabout that remain open will be reduced to two lanes.

A further closure will also take place to Hollinswood South Railway Bridge in which works will be carried out during the night on the weekend of 16 and 17 August.

A full traffic diversion plan will be implemented for the duration of the scheme.

The work is the latest major road improvement project to be carried out in Telford with £230,000 already being spent on the resurfacing of a 760 metre-stretch of the A41 at Woodcote.

The work started on July 21 and is expected to take four weeks to complete.

Traffic is generally being restricted to a single lane controlled by traffic signals and at the end of the four weeks traffic lights will be needed at the site from September 15 to 19 when high-friction, anti-skid surfacing will be applied.

Resurfacing work will also begin on August 18 on a 500-metre section of Hinkshay Road between the roundabout at Finger Road Dawley to a point past Mount Gilbert School.

Traffic will again be be restricted to a single lane controlled by traffic signals.

A further isolated section of 100 metres will also be resurfaced near the site of the former battery factory as part of a job lasting two weeks, although traffic lights will be put back at the site from September 29 to October 3 for the laying of an anti-skid surface.
