A Telford post office named on a hit-list of proposed closures earlier this year will definitely be axed. On Tuesday, Post Office Ltd confirmed that Randlay Post Office is to be shut - despite huge opposition from local residents and civic leaders.
Twenty-eight branches across Shropshire were unveiled on a hit-list for proposed closures in April and last month it was announced 13 branches would close, 13 would be replaced by outreach services and Greenfields Post Office in Shrewsbury would be saved.
But bosses at Randlay Post Office were told there would be further consultation on their branch.
Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, Andrew Eade, said he was “extremely disappointed” by the “crass stupidity” of the decision.
“For many communities, the local post office offers more than just stamps and envelopes, it really is the heart of the community, more often than not offering more than the traditional services,” said Councillor Eade.
Negative
“I am extremely disappointed by the Post Office Ltd’s decision as this will have a really negative impact on the local community.”
Telford MP David Wright said he felt the consultation process had “been a sham.”
“The whole community spoke out to save Randlay Post Office,” he said.
“The branch makes a profit and it is well used. The decision to close it is appaling.”
Mark Partington, for Post Office Ltd, said the closure was needed to put the network on a “more stable footing for the future.”
