Friendlies end on high note

AFC Telford United rounded off their pre-season preparations with a 4-1 demolition of League Two side Chester City at the Bucks Head on Saturday.

The Bucks were full value for their win against a side containing at least five players who will be in league action this weekend.

Telford started the better and could have gone ahead int he first few minutes.

A mistake by visiting midfielder Jay Harris allowed Carl Rodgers to get in a shot, but his effort was saved by keeper Chris Sanna.

Then left wing back Steve Jagielka hit a great volley from the left that flashed just wide of a post.

Telford wnt ahead after 27 minutes when Gavin Cowan headed in at the far post from a great free kick by Martyn Naylor.

The doubled the lead on the hour when Naylor again vreated the opportunity and his free kick fell for Rodgers to fire home.

Lee Vaughan came on for Naylor and very nearly got on the score sheet when when he just failed to connect with a great ball from Terry Fearns.

When Fearns was brought down by the Chester keeper in the area Andy Brown scored from the spot.

Chester got on the score sheet with a penalty of their own after 82 minutes when Jon Adams brought Andy Mitchell down, but Telford had not finished.

There was still time for Liam Blakeman to lash in number four five minutes from time.

There was a dent in the club’s preparations however, as Asa Charlton, who delivers beer for a living, was forced to sit out the game after dropping a barrel on his foot and breaking a toe.

He will now be out for up to three weeks, though he was suspended for the first two games of the season in any case.

Boss Rob Smith was happy with the result.

“Chester brought a young side but we did the rights things and took our chances.
