Death of picture man at age 49

A former Telford Journal photographer has died at the age of 49 after losing his battle against illness.

Father-of-two Gary Wilkinson died at his home in Walker Crescent, St Georges on August 21, leaving wife Beverley, son Richard and daughter, Jaime.

The couple had been married for 27 years.

He worked as an engineer but his hobby of photography led him into supplying pictures to the Telford Journal. “Gradually, they asked him to do more and more. I’d go round with him, on our motorbike, with all the camera gear in the panniers,” said Mrs Wilkinson.

In 1984, Mr Wilkinson became a staff photographer, working on the Telford Journal and Shropshire Star.

He eventually left the Shropshire Star to pursue a freelance career. He worked locally and took photographs for public relations agencies and other clients.

Mr Wilkinson suffered from cancer and died peacefully at home.

The funeral will take place at Telford Crematorium on August 30 at 12 noon. Donations can be made to The Severn Hospice and Marie Curie Nurses.
