Blooming good

By Janine Griffiths

A couple living in the shadow of The Wrekin are celebrating after scooping first place in the Daily Mail National Gardens competition.

Fiona and George Chancellor, of Windy Ridge, Little Wenlock, beat off competition from 2,000 entries to take the top prize of £2,000.

A feature on the garden was also published in the newspaper’s weekend supplement on Saturday.

Mother-of-two Fiona, 51, said: “We entered the competition in May and we had to send in seven photos and answer questions about what we particularly liked and what the garden was like when we moved in.”

Mrs Chancellor, who has lived at the home for 23 years, said they were thrilled to discover they had made it through to the final of the competition.

“They came around to have another look in July and they chose the winner. We were very pleased.

“I’m probably the driving force behind the actual planting but George is becoming just as interested as me in it.”

Mrs Chancellor, who works part time teaching English as a foreign language, said she thought their garden, which is two thirds of an acre, was picked as the winner because of its strong design and planting.

Members of the public are invited to take a look around the garden on Sunday, when it is open under the National Gardens Scheme.

It will be open from noon to 5pm. Entry costs £3.50 with proceeds going to charity.
