Academies are the way forward for education in Telford & Wrekin, according to the head of the newly launched Abraham Darby Academy.
Steve Hawke, school principal, said that the transformation of the Abraham Darby Academy in Madeley has already helped to give “a fresh start” to pupils.
Abdab has become the latest school to relaunch as one of the Government’s flagship academies after it was put into special measures three years ago.
The changes were brought about through a federation between the school and the highflying Adams Grammar School in Newport.
Mr Hawke said that the changes have already received positive feedback from parents and helped to improve educational standards in the school.
He said: “Our main aim is to take an improving school and turn it into an outstanding academy. Before I took over the role of head teacher the school had already started to improve.
“Already the atmosphere has changed, children wear their new uniforms with pride and there are more courses and extra curricular activities available for children.
“What we are doing now is embracing the opportunity for creating a new beginning in the school and creating a world class educational experience for pupils.
“I think that the academy is the best way forward for young people in our area and has helped to instill greater confidence in the local community about educational standards.”
Jim Richardson, chief executive officer of the academy, and retired principal of Adams Grammar School, added: “The new academy will not only focus on improving exam results for pupils but also on teaching the whole person and preparing children to play a useful role in society.”
Mr Richardson said the introduction of the new school uniform had had an “immediate impact” in terms of helping create a sense of unity.
The uniform is of the same design as that worn by pupils at Adams.
“The unique partnership between the two schools will work to increase the opportunities for the children and make a real difference to staff and pupils at both schools,” said Mr Richardson.
Plans to build a new 6th form centre within the academy are also on the horizon, along with the building of a new primary school and leisure complex.
The academy is funded by Telford & Wrekin Council and the Haberdashers’ Livery Company in London, Adams sponsors.
