Telford is set to mark the triumph of the Olympic and Paralympic Games - and the success of its local athletes - with a spectacular lighting-up of the Iron Bridge and surrounding monuments next week.
It takes place on Friday and Saturday and will be accompanied by a sound and light show at one of the Gorge’s museums on the Friday night.
The show will feature performances by MOBO award winning artist Soweto Kinch and music from Orchestra of the Swan, Black Voices and Bombay Baja Brass Band.
The cultural spectacular at Ironbridge is part of a weekend of more than 40 events across Shropshire and the West Midlands, celebrating Olympic success and triggering a four-year celebration of culture and creativity in the build up to London 2012 Olympics.
Spokeswoman Jo Hammond said the 2012 Olympics also embraced a cultural aspect called the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. She said: “As the UK basks in the success of its most successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in recent years, the launch of the Cultural Olympiad marks the next stage in the journey towards London 2012.
“The evening’s events will take place at Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, one of the ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums in the famous Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site and will be compered by ITN news anchor, Nina Nannar.
“West Midlands’ members of Team GB are also expected to attend alongside dignitaries, sports and cultural leaders and young people from across Shropshire and the West Midlands.
“Members of the public can get hold of tickets to the regional launch on a first come, first served basis by phoning 01275 335911 or emailing rebecca.frisby@sectormarketing.co.uk.”
