Four marathons in four weeks

Wrekin Road Runner Jon Aston is celebrating after completing four marathons in as many weeks.

Jon, who took on his first marathon just two years ago, ran the Wolverhampton Marathon on September 7, Nottingham on the 14, Anglesey on the 21, with the 35th Berlin Marathon his grand finale on September 28.

Jon said: “Now I have completed 19 marathons, 12 of them in 2008. I plan to run at least another two marathons, possible three or four, by the end of the year -Êthe next one being Leicester on October 19.

Since he took up running to lose weight and get fit in 2005, Jon has consistently set himself new challenges and has now set himself the target of running an ultra marathon in the new year.

Dark

“Three years ago, the last time I had run was at school, and back then I hated it. But I gave it a go in the dark so people wouldn’t see me. I found I really enjoyed running and, to give myself something to aim for, entered a couple of 10K races,” he said.

A few months later he entered the 2006 Flora London Marathon, and has been running marathons ever since.

He was joined in Berlin by his wife Sarah and Mark Evans, also members of Wrekin Road Runners, taking to the streets with 40,000 other competitors.

“The race was an incredible experience. The support of thousands of supporters really made for a great atmosphere, and running under theBrandenburg Gate near the finish was one of my most memorable experiences,”said Jon.

Mark, running in his second marathon, completed the run in a new personal best time of 4:41:11, Sarah finished in 4:24:48 and Jon in 4:52:29.

Jon added: “Joining a running club has really helped me. I was able to train with others and get tips and advice from experienced runners.”
