New role for nightclub at town centre

A Telford nightclub which has been closed for more than three years is to reopen as a restaurant and club as part of a multi-million pound masterplan.

The former Athena nightclub in the town centre will undergo a huge revamp and reopen as a Chinese restaurant and nightclub.

The plans were revealed by the Hark Group which has bought Telford Shopping Centre with the intention of launching a huge multi million regeneration project called The Round, which will also inject town centre housing for the first time.

The new nightclub and restaurant complex will be run by Costas Venezi, of Medlink Enterprise, which opened the successful Pussycats complex in Wellington.

Regeneration chiefs said the new Chinese restaurant would include a new frontage onto Central Square.

They said the proposals, if successful, would create new jobs and top new entertainment activities in Telford Town Centre but could not say how many jobs at this stage.

The latest nightclub and restaurant plans come just three months after the Hark Group revealed plans for a new community health clinic in the redevelopment.

Rob Cossey, director of Hark Group, said: “Creating a mixed use development has always been the primary focus of our ongoing proposals. We have proved this commitment through the unveiling of the health clinic in July and now these plans.

“Breathing new life into Telford by giving it a strong night time economy that does not currently exist is the latest move to ensure our plans have many different uses for as many different people as possible.”
