Making their mark at festival

Budding young writers who put pen to paper for two competitions run in conjunction with Wellington Literary Festival have been commended for their efforts at a special ceremony.

Winners in the annual school journalism competition, run by Wellington Town Council and sponsored by the Telford Journal, were invited to Wellington Civic Offices where they were presented with their prizes.

First, second and third prize winners were handed vouchers for £30, £20 and £10 respectively.

Wrekin College was also presented with a cheque for £50 for the most winning entries received.

Prizes for the Peggy Harrison annual infant and junior school poetry competition were also handed out on the night.

The competition was renamed this year in memory of the late councillor, who died in October last year following a battle with cancer.

Councillor Gary Davies said: “The judges felt the standards for the poetry competition this year were excellent. We had over 200 entries from Wellington schools; Wrekin View, Short Wood, Dothill and St Patrick’s Primary Schools and everyone did very well.”
