Offer of help to troubled Sankey’s

Telford MP David Wright is offering his help to both management and unions at the troubled GKN Sankey plant in Hadley in their battle to avoid compulsory redundancies.

Mr Wright’s intervention follows the disclosure that GKN has begun laying off staff at Hadley Castle with more workers were set to be made idle before Christmas.

The lay-offs, which bosses said were short-term and hopefully temporary, follow a fall in orders from Land Rover, a principal customer.

The Labour MP said these were troubling times for the whole of industry and not just GKN and he would do everythig within his power to help the company weather the storm.

Mr Wright said: “GKN is one of the biggest employers in Shropshire and has always been important to the lifeblood of the region.

“The credit cruch has put everyone is under pressure and the troubles which have befallen Hadley Castle are, sadly, due to forces beyond the control of either staff or management.

“Management and unions have been working closely and very well together at the plant and they deserve praise for their efforts. I shall be contacting the company to see if there is any way in which I can help.”

Rob Ball, human resources director, said: “We welcome any level of support, particularly from someone as influential as Mr Wright.”
