Paying tribute to those who fell

Members of the armed forces from Telford who made the ultimate sacrifice fighting for their country will be honoured this Sunday at special Remembrance Day events.

Across the borough, there will be wreath laying and march pasts, including Wellington, where the parade will make its way along Victoria Road and New Street, into The Square and culminate in front of the church lychgates.

There will be a two minute silence and a short service.

Oakengates parade will leave The Salvation Army at 10.45am and arrive shortly before 11am at Hartshill Park gates for a service and wreath laying.

Remembrance Sunday this year has added poignancy because 2008 marks 90 years since the First World War guns fell silent. It also marks the 90th birthday of the Royal Air Force.

To mark the double anniversary RAF Cosford is holding a service of remembrance in Hangar One on Sunday from 10.45am.

Museum visitors are being invited to join RAF personnel past and present at the service, led by Reverend (Squadron Leader) Edwards, the RAF Cosford Chaplain.

Philip Clayton, service organiser, said: “We will be paying homage to those servicemen and women from generations past who died defending others.

“We are also paying our thanks to the thousands of men and women from the UK who put their lives at risk in the line of duty.”

Alongside the service will be the on-going Lest We Forget Exhibition - a temporary display about the sacrifices made during human conflict which runs until November 16.

Madeley Branch of The Royal British Legion holds its annual Remembrance Parade and Service on Sunday from 10.15am

The parade forms behind the Dolphin pub, Woodside from 10.15am with the march to Madeley Cenotaph from 10.45am.
