The streets of Telford were lit-up with shining Christmas lanterns last weekend at the Dawley Christmas Lantern Parade.
A traditional piper and drummer led a procession of youngsters carrying lanterns through the town.
The focal piece of the event was a willow sculpture of The Springwell Pit, which was carried by pupils from Dawley Church of England Primary School, in memory of those who lost their lives in a local pit disaster on December 6 1872.
People from all over Telford came to the Dawley public lantern workshop earlier in the week to make their own lanterns to be displayed in Saturday’s parade.
One of the organisers, Helen Williams said parents who came to drop off their children at the workshop ended up staying to make lanterns for themselves and also as gifts for others because it was so much fun.
Mrs Williams said: “There were some wonderful creations made as people’s imagination and confidence grew with the lantern-making materials.”
For those who missed the fun in Dawley, another lantern parade is being held in Telford Town Park this weekend.
The family event, on Saturday, will include a sponsored Santa stroll, lantern parade and Christmas carols and is being co-ordinated by Telford & Wrekin Council, Friends of Telford Town Park and the Royal National Institute for the Blind.
The lanterns have been made by young people who have taken part in a series of creative workshops.
The three mile Santa Stroll is being held to raise funds for Royal National Institute for the Blind. Registration costs five pounds and will include provision of a Santa Suit (sizes for 12s and over available - for younger children please bring your own) and proceeds will go to the RNIB.
The Lantern Parade meets outside Spout Farm House at 4.30pm. To register for the Santa stroll call David Harper on (01952) 595005 or visit www.rnib.org.uk/santastroll. Admission and activities are free except for face paining which is £1.
