This year’s Rotary Tree of Light appeal has proved to be the most successful ever… smashing all previous records to reach a grand total of £35,000.
The 14th annual campaign has set a new precedent and exceeded last year’s figure of £33,000 in spite of the financial squeeze.
Over 4,000 names were added to the Tree of Light which stood over the festive period in Dean Square in Telford Shopping Centre.
Appeal chairman Paul Booth said: “The figures reflect how important the Tree of Light is to the people of Telford, whose priority is to remember loved ones at Christmas. We express our sincere thanks to all those who took part.
“Considerable thanks are also due to everyone who made it possible. We are indebted to them all.”
The proceeds from the appeal will be handed over to five charities. Half will go to the Severn Hospice in Telford and the remaining half will be split between the four charities nominated by each of the participating Rotary Clubs.
These charities are Age Concern (Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin); Macmillan Cancer Support - Shropshire; Home-Start Telford and Wrekin and Telford Community First Responders.
The money will be presented to the chosen charities at a presentation evening which will be held at the Buckatree Hall Hotel in Wellington on February 5.
