Hotel is planned

A new  50-bedroom hotel with leisure facilities is being lined up for development in Muxton, bringing a boost for jobs and the potential to attract more tourists.

The Shropshire Golf Centre at Granville Park has submitted plans to Telford & Wrekin Borough Council with a decision due to be taken in April. The scheme proposes a new community leisure facility, including a spa for Telford residents and visitors.

The application involves a 50-bedroom hotel with an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, fitness studio, spa and restaurant to enhance the facilities at The Shropshire Golf Centre.

Although bosses are remaining tight-lipped over the cost of plans,  it is hoped the project will inject job opportunities into the area.

The golf club is owned and run by Burhill Golf & Leisure and already has a 27-hole golf complex, driving range and practice facilities, clubhouse, restaurant and function rooms to cater for golfers, local businesses and weddings.

James Bracey, Burhill Golf & Leisure’s property and asset manager, said: “The Shropshire Golf Centre will remain a golfing venue, but the hotel complex will offer everyone first class leisure facilities as well as much needed additional accommodation for the town, not to mention potential job opportunities.

“These proposals are a testament to Telford’s robust economy and offer an excellent opportunity for the town.”

A decision on the planning application from Telford and Wrekin Council is expected by Tuesday April 7.

Mr Ralph Morgan, clerk for Lilleshall and Donnington, said: “There were no objections to the application and we welcome the fact it would attract tourism and jobs into the area. It is a ‘good news’ story for the area.”

Meanwhile in Madeley, nearly 50 jobs have been saved after a threatened hotel was saved from administration. The Madeley Court Hotel was taken over by Focus Hotels Management on Wednesday after its previous owners, the Real Hotel Company, went into administration last month.

The new owners say 47 jobs have been saved at the hotel.
