Motorists and pedestrians were urged to take extra care this week after Telford & Wrekin Council was forced to cut back on gritting because of dwindling supplies of salt.
Depending on weather conditions, the council says stocks will last until the weekend and it is working with the Government to get more.
To eke out supplies, gritting was being restricted this week to A and B roads, one primary access into each main town and routeways to ambulance, police and fire stations.
The council says low supplies are a national problem and council officials say if they run out they will work with 999 organistions, public services, councils and community groups to provide essential services.
Andrew Eade, Council leader, said: “The Council is working very hard to obtain as a matter of urgency more salt supplies through the Government which, because of the national shortage, is co-ordinating deliveries of salt to councils.
“Based on the current weather forecasts of nightly frosts, and if we receive no further supplies, we expect to be able to continue salting until the end of the weekend.”
Chief Superintendent Pete Robinson, of Telford Police, said: “Motorists must take even greater care and drive according to the conditions, particularly on estate roads that have until now been gritted.”
