Anger over mast

Angry residents in Sutton Hill are threatening to take legal action against Telford & Wrekin Council over plans to install a mobile phone mast close to hundreds of residential homes.

They have set up an action group called Sham (Sutton Hill Against Masts) to oppose the move to put an O2 mast near the junction of Great Hay Drive with Sutton Hill Way.

They said the mast would dominate the local area and could present potential health risks to residents.

Resident Kevin Beal said:  “Is ratepayers’ money being used to find sites for mobile phone masts for telecommunications companies?

“ These masts have been blamed for cancer clusters and serious illnesses in other areas – surely the council is not encouraging their installation in highly populated residential locations?”

Don Hoyle, a member of SHAM group said: “The main problem with the mast is that it blocks the view of the junction for motorists which could potentially be dangerous.”

The plans are set to go before Telford & Wrekin Council’s plans board next Wednesday.

A spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council said it was unable to comment on the situation in view of the application going before the plans board.
