On right track

Plans were revealed this week for another direct rail link to London, with stops in Telford.

Virgin Trains has put in a bid to Network Rail to run two services daily to and from the capital from Shrewsbury to London Euston.

The proposed service – which would call at Wellington and Telford Central before going via Walsall, Wolverhampton and Nuneaton – could take just over two and three quarter hours.

The county’s direct rail link to London was restored last year when Wrexham & Shropshire began its service to Marylebone in April.

In December, Arriva Trains Wales revealed it was looking into the possibility of restoring an old route to provide three trains a day between Aberystwyth and London Marylebone, taking in Shrewsbury, Wellington and Telford stations.

Ken Gibbs, a spokesman for Virgin Trains, confirmed that it was preparing a business case for the service which could be up and running by December if all goes to plan

It wants to run trains leaving Shrewsbury at 6.42am, which would arrive at 9.30am, and 1.42pm, and two leaving Euston at 10.33am and 5.46pm.

He said:”I have to emphasis that the business case is still being worked up but we have expressed an interest. We need to look at the economics of it and whether we will get support from stakeholders.

“Unlike the required services that are part of our franchise agreement, these would be at our commercial risk.”
