Train company bosses are to “temporarily” axing some of the county’s London services on Monday until the credit-crunch eases.
Officials from Wrexham & Shropshire announced they are changing their timetable on Monday, March 9, to end their “least popular” London services but hope to re-introduce them as soon as the economic climate improves.
The cuts include the 18.21 from Wellington to London and the 10.17am from London to Wellington.
The decision was made after the company carried out a review into the number of passengers using the trains but there are hopes that services will be added in the future.
Richard Harper, commercial manager for Wrexham & Shropshire, said after the company announcements: “Since we’ve started the service last April we’ve been looking at what we do next. Over time we’ve been looking at potentially moving up to six services. In the short term we’re moving down to four but we hope it will be a temporary measure.
“We don’t have a time-frame on it but I could see a situation where if the economy was turning round quickly we could be in a position to put in that fifth train and possibly a sixth train.”
He said Wrexham & Shropshire was “always looking to improve and develop and grow” its business.
“This is really a short-term measure about cutting our cloth to secure the long-term future of the business,” he added.
MP Mark Pritchard said:“It is unfair for WSMR to cream off just the busier routes. They need to provide a service to the public not just their shareholders.”
