Anger at crisis in jobs at top firm

Anger is rising across Telford over the way Wrekin Construction of Shifnal was allowed to fold after 40 years in business.

More than 500 jobs are on the line after the company went into administration.

Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard raised the issue in Parliament, saying he had alerted the Business Secretary to the company’s short-term financial difficulty and need of support from Royal Bank of Scotland in December 2008.

“The Business Secretary has done absolutely nothing at all to help this company,” he said.

“These massive job losses were avoidable. This is a company which has an order book right now of £50 million.

“It is an absolute scandal that ministers knew about this. This was avoidable, yet ministers have done absolutely nothing to save jobs.”
