MP warns over mini moto peril

A Telford MP is launching a new campaign to stop irresponsible mini moto riders from speeding through Woodside housing estate.

David Wright, MP for Telford, said he is concerned over the speeds mini motos are being ridden through the estate.

He said there is concern that children playing outside might be knocked down. He has now contacted the police and Telford & Wrekin Council to see what can be done to hamper riders.

A police spokesman said they had received calls about mini motos and believed they had identified the individual involved who would now get a visit from an officer.

“An option would be to take the mini moto off any individual found to be behaving dangerously or irresponsible,” the spokesman added.

Mr Wright said: “ It is good news the police are taking this matter so seriously.

“The irresponsible use of mini motos is extremely dangerous. I am very concerned someone will be knocked over and seriously injured.

“I think we need to redesign some of our neighbourhoods to stop the use of mini motos altogether. This will involve the erection of barriers and the closing of alleyways where people race mini motos.”

Councillor Miles Hosken, cabinet member for the environment, feels barriers could stop others from using the area.

He said: “There are measures we can put in place such as barriers, bollards and chicanes to make it more difficult for people who use these vehicles in an anti-social manner.

“It would slow them down but probably would not stop them while at the same time making access to Woodside’s public footpaths more difficult for wheelchair users and those with prams and pushchairs.

“I would advise residents who are affected to liaise with their local community support officer via their Police and Communities Together meetings.”

Police pointed out it was against the law to ride in public places anyway.

“It is illegal to ride the mini motos on public highways and pavements. They can only be used on land where they have the agreement and permission of the land owner.”
