Town plans for museum

Wellington’s historic Edgbaston House could be transformed into a town museum as part of  the Civic Quarter £8m regeneration scheme.

Telford & Wrekin officials are in discussions with Wellington’s Civic and History Societies over transforming the 19th century building in Walker Street into a museum with a virtual reality aspect.

It would hold items of historical interest to Wellington and possibly information on The Wrekin’s history.

Residents called for Edgbaston House to be retained after original regeneration plans listed it for demolition.  The Georgian building is a former solicitors’ and coroner’s office.

Revised plans were  unveiled at a meeting in Wellington last Thursday. Improvements included peaked roofs on the buildings to help them fit in with the rest of the area.

Eric Carter, portfolio holder for regeneration said: “Everybody is happy we are giving back Edgbaston House. I suggested part of the property at our expense, be a possible museum. We will fund the restoration of it and Wellington civic/ history society will run it.

“They will decide what to put in it and we will put a grant fund.”

Officials are remaining tight-lipped over how much it would cost for a museum saying it was “still early days.”

Chairman of Wellington Civic Society, Ross Vickers, said he was meeting  computer experts on Friday to explore the possibility of incorporating a virtual reality aspect.

He said: “We are very pleased there are signs of a museum to come about. It is very exciting.

“What we all want to see is the town regenerated and the more attractions the better.  think the museum will be open to anything that has a history with Wellington and it is hoped we can get something on The Wrekin incorporated into the museum.

“It is very early days at the moment and nothing is completely agreed. We are working very hard with the council to make all these schemes work.”

An office in Edgbaston House has also been highlighted as a possible work space for the new town manager.
