A new future

A former Wellington pub could soon be transformed into a base for vulnerable people to learn life skills.

A couple who live on Kings Street have submitted plans to Telford & Wrekin Council to turn the Black Horse pub, on the same street, into a bed and breakfast for people with learning difficulties.

Patrick McCarthy, who has helped people with learning difficulties for around 15 years, believes this is a unique opportunity to equip people with skills for life.

People will be allowed to stay in the accommodation for up to two years to introduce them into independent living.

As well as a place to live, it will also be a base to learn a variety of skills including cookery, gardening, computer skills and photography.

The former pub, which already has three bedrooms upstairs, will be kitted out with new furniture and facilities. There are also plans for a small gym to be installed.

Mr McCarthy has £80,000 for the project but believes he will still need a further £30,000 to £40,000 to complete works.

“We are hoping to be set up by the end of the year, that is our plan. It will be quite unique and people looking to become independent will be welcome to live there for up to two years.”

David Humphreys, Mr McCarthy’s agent said: “They are very kind and very unselfish people and are trying to help the community. They are doing it themselves financially with very little support.”

The council  is due to decide the application on June 15.
