£70,000 cycle and ball court scheme

A group of youngsters could soon see their designs for a new cycle track and revamped ball court in Telford leave the drawing board as part of a £70,000 council plan.

Telford & Wrekin Council has submitted plans which will see the improvements carried out on the games area off Botany Bay Close in Aqueduct.

The existing ball court on site will be improved and a new cycle track laid down if the plan is given the go-ahead and youngsters who use the area will have played a large part in their look.

Council spokesman Russell Griffin said: “The authority has been working on the plans with West Mercia Police and alongside a youth group in Aqueduct.

“The young people have chosen the design for the new-look court and track.

“It means that the people who use the area regularly are having a big say in its future.”

The redevelopment, which will be considered by the council’s plans board at a later date, is being funded jointly by the authority and the Big Lottery Fund.

The revamped ball court will house basketball and five-a-side football facilities, along with seating, safety signs and a litter bin.

Mr Griffin said: “The cycling area will be for youngsters to practice and learn to ride their bikes.

“The ball court needs to be refurbished because it is old, wooden and has been targeted by vandals.”
