Youngsters pound the pavements

More than 160 children from schools across Telford raced through the streets of Wellington in the annual Bayley Mile race, which dates back to the 1930s.

Youngsters from schools including Blessed Robert Johnson, Charlton, Ercall Wood, HLC, Wrekin College, Sutherland, Thomas Telford, Short Wood, Millbrook, Dothill, Old Hall, Wrekin View, St Patricks, Abraham Derby and Apley Wood all took part.

A host of volunteers ensured the youngsters completed three laps of the 500-metre course around Wellington Civic and Leisure Centre during each of the five races.

People, including teachers and family members, lined the streets along the course to cheer on the youngsters.

The categories included boys and girls under-11, Year 7 and 8 pupils, and Year 9 and 10 pupils.

Brian Smith, who helped revive the race 13 years ago when he was a town councillor, was also presented with a long service award for his dedication to the event. He now volunteers to help organise the event every year.

Mr Smith said: “Wellington Town Council organises the event so well, with the great help of Wrekin College. I was on the town council 13 years ago when we started it again. There was a road race pre-war in the 1930s but then it was stopped during the war but the town council wanted to restart it so we did.

“We are very proud of Wellington’s Bayley Mile and all credit to the town council for keeping it going.

“Everyone volunteers their time, including about 20 stewards and the Wrekin College staff, which is great and they must be thanked for that.”

Councillor Dorothy Roberts, chairman of the promotions and liaison committee of Wellington Town Council, said the event was so popular they had been forced to turn youngsters away over the last two years.

She said the number of schoolchildren who wanted to take part was higher  than health and safety restrictions.
