Spencers’ Mall shock closure

A Telford market closed its doors for the last time on Saturday with claims that traders were “leaving in droves”.

Brian Maccleston, manager of Spencers’ Malls and Markets on Southwater Way in the town centre, blamed the closure on ‘speculation’ over the town’s redevelopment plans.

He said: “The market closed on Saturday and this will be permanent.

“It is not down to rent. It is the speculation all the time from Telford & Wrekin Council and Hark Apollo talking about the developments. They are leaving in droves.”

Mr Maccleston said he would now retire.

The building became a market around March 1992 and was operated by UK Markets Limited before becoming Urban Image Limited in September 2000.

It was home to many traders including butchers, hairdressers, florist, clothing and more.

David Wright, Telford MP, said: “This is a great shame as Spencer’s Mall has been very popular over the years.”

Hark Apollo group bosses own the market hall.

A spokesman for Hark said: “Like many people in Telford, we are sad to see the market close. Ultimately, it is a commercial decision of the market’s operators, Urban Image Ltd, to cease trading, but it comes as a sharp reminder of just how tough it is out there for all retailers trying to cope with current trading conditions.

“We at Hark are hopeful that the current market traders will be in a position to find alternative accommodation in the town centre. We will also be encouraging the possibility of new operators trading in the market hall. We will keep everyone posted on developments.

“What these events have shown is the vital need to protect the town centre core of Telford, and not to dilute it by extending the shopping area further.”

A Telford & Wrekin Council spokesperson said they never owned Spencer’s Mall and it is not part of the Council’s regeneration plans.

He said: “The council is continuing discussions with Hark Apollo to help achieve both organisations’ wider objectives – to regenerate the town centre.

“It is disappointing when any business is forced to close and the council contacted mall stall holders to offer help in finding alternative premises.”

Urban Image Ltd were unavailable for comment as the Journal went to print.
