Some of Telford AC’s best young athletes competed recently against tough competitors from the all over the Midlands.
On the track, Sophie Worrall came 5th in the under 17 80m hurdles. Nicholas Pearce was 7th in the under 15 80m hurdles, while David Edwards ran well to earn a place in the under 17 200m final, where he finished 8th.
Toby Ogundipe and Mitchell Jenderko both competed in the under 17 100m, and Tobi came 4th in the 100m hurdles.
In the field events, the Rubery family were prominent. Hayley won a bronze medal in the under 17 discus with a new PB of 31.83, while Callum competed in both the under-15 shot and discus, with PBs in each event of 10.40 and 38.24 respectively.
In the long jump Nicholas Pearce came 5th. Aidan Reynolds was 5th and James Bell 8th in the under 17 javelin. Ali Dummett was 4th in the under 17 shot with a new PB of 11.73.
Callum Rubery took home a gold medal in the discus, Sophie Worrall silver in the long jump, and Mitchell Jenderko bronze in the long jump.
Upcoming track and field athletics events in Telford
Entry for spectators at the Telford track is free, events start around midday and last until around 4pm.
14 June: National Junior League, which this month is hosted by Telford AC at the track in Oakengates, featuring the best athletes of the under-20 age group. Look out for- Toby Birtwhistle, 400m.
21 June: McCain UK Young Athlete’s League. This time hosted by Telford at the Oakengates track, featuring the best clubs in the Midlands region. Events are for under 13s to under 17s. Look out for Mitchell Jenderko, under 17 100m and long jump.
4 July: Midland League. Telford AC’s best senior athletes compete for points against other Midland clubs. Look out for: Sean Saxon, 2009 European over 40 gold medallist at 110m hurdles.
19 July: McCain UK Young Athlete’s League. Features athletes in the under 13 to under 17 age groups. Look out for: James Wilkins, 400m.
2 August: Midland League Division 6, hosted by Shrewsbury AC at the Telford track. Look out for: Andy Jones, long jump and 100m.
If you’re into sport and looking for a day out, attendance to at least one Telford AC track and field event this summer is a must. Whether you like the speed of the 100m, the grace of the pole vault, the power of the shot put or the excitement of the relays, track and field will keep you glued to your seat.
