Bid to introduce town Ale Taster

People who love ale are being sought to fill an ancient Wellington role last carried out in the 19th century.

Bosses of Wellington market are looking to reintroduce the position of a town Ale Taster and will launch their search during Wellington’s Food and Drink Tasting Extravaganza, this Saturday.

The job was said to be popular during medieval times and duties included visiting stalls and inns on market days and during the town’s fairs to make sure ales, beers and other produce on sale were of good quality.

Malcolm Ball, chief executive of Wellington Market Company, said the company is looking to revive the forgotten position within the town.

“Wellington Market was awarded its Charter in 1244, so the Ale Taster would have been a familiar sight right up to the 1840s when the position was phased out,” said Mr Ball. “Although the attraction of such a role may seem obvious at first, the 21st Century version would incorporate many more responsibilities than the original.

“Our ceremonial Ale Taster would become an ambassador for the promotion of food and drink in the town.

“The successful candidate will have a sound knowledge and genuine love of food and drink.”

Wellington’s Food and Drink Tasting Extravaganza will be held in Market Approach, off the main Market Square, giving visitors the chance to try local produce.
