Rail revamp for Telford Central

Rail bosses are planning to spend almost £1million next year giving  Telford’s main train station a major revamp.

Network Rail, London Midland and Telford & Wrekin Council have teamed up to give Telford Central Rail Station a facelift and contracts are being finalised this week.

Plans will see the station’s main building re-glazed, swing doors replaced with automatic ones and toilets given disabled access.

The Shrewsbury platform will have a new shelter and more seating will be installed into the booking hall, while Platform One’s canopy will also be extended and new signs and extra cycle storage will be provided. Landscaping of the area is included in the proposals and people waiting for taxis and buses will be provided with better waiting facilities.

It is hoped work on station improvements will begin at the start of 2010 and be completed by early summer.

Mark Pritchard, Wrekin MP, said he has been campaigning for rail improvements.

“I am glad that London Midland and Network Rail have finally listened to my pleas over many years,” he said.

“There needs to be improved lighting and access for disabled people as well as making this station far more welcoming.

“This is good news.”

David Wright, Telford MP, said: “This is something I have been pressing for for some time and I welcome the news. Rail use continues to increase and we need to give passengers the best possible facilities at Telford Central station.”

It is thought the project will cost between £700,000 and just under a £1 million.

Ed McCrann, senior commercial scheme sponsor Network Rail, said: “Network Rail is really pleased to be working with London Midland and the local council to bring improvements to Telford Station.

“We are currently working on the planning and design phase and are looking forward to delivering the project in 2010 with the help of our industry partners.”

Alex Hynes, London Midland commercial director, said the company was also delighted to be working in partnership to bring significant improvements to Telford Central station.

The plans have been revealed as part of the National Station Improvements Programme.

Cllr Stephen Bentley, cabinet member for environment, said: “The council supports all improvements to local public transport and is looking forward to being involved in this project.”

Drawings of the revamp will be released later this year.
