A 75-year-old woman has been left bruised after tripping in a pot hole near Wellington’s new bus station.
Dorothy Hopkins, of Dawley Road, was out with her daughter and grand children last week when her foot got caught in a hole in the road between New Street and the former Parade car park.
Liz Matthews, Mrs Hopkins daughter, is a nurse and said it was lucky she was there to help.
She said:“She fell down a pothole that was two inches deep and six inches across.
“She is a bit battered and bruised.
“I am very surprised she didn’t do any more damage. She is extremely lucky.”
Gary Davies, Wellington town councillor, saw the accident happen.
“She caught her foot in one of the cracks in the road and she fell right in front of me. She cut her arm, hurt her leg and hurt her mouth.”
Mrs Matthews said her mother has not been out on her own since the accident.
“She has been staying with me and it has knocked her self confidence, she won’t go into Wellington on her own.”
Councillor Davies is now supporting Mrs Matthews in calling for Telford & Wrekinto rid the area of potholes.
He said: “I am quite bemused as to how we can do such a wonderful job on the bus station, which I must admit looks excellent, and not bother with the main thoroughfare from New Street into the bus station. The surface of the road is absolutely disgusting.
“I would hope they get something done about this as soon as possible before somebody else badly hurts themselves on the terrible road surfaces.”
A Telford & Wrekin Council spokesperson said: “The work on the footway will be completed this week subject to the weather not affecting the programme. In the meantime, we are putting up signage to warn people that there is a temporary footpath.
“We are still waiting for confirmation where the incident occurred and what the circumstances are but we would obviously advise people to take care in the area until the work is completed.”
