Telford Dean leaves town for new post in Midlands

The first ever Dean of Telford is set to leave his unique position after 13 years in the post to work in Wolverhampton.

Reverend David Lavender has been working within churches across Telford for the last 23 years but is now moving on to pastures new.

The Ecumenical Dean post is said to be the only one of its kind in the country and the role was established to represent all church denominations within the borough.

As part of his job he has been involved with a number of partnerships including Telford Race and Equality Partnership.

He has also worked to help with issues including social inclusion and discrimination.

Rev Lavender, who is a Methodist minister, has now been asked to work with a Methodist church in Wolverhampton.

He said: “Leaving Telford will be a wrench.

“I enjoyed working in Telford it is an exciting place to live.

“I shall miss it, it has been a good 13 years.”

He said he enjoyed the role which he felt was a great way to promote Christianity within the community.

His last service is this Sunday at St Michael’s Church in Madeley from 6pm.

A civic ceremony is to be held in Wellington today, Thursday, from 7pm for the mayor and other officials to say farewell.

A replacement has not yet been found for the role.

John Hall, Archdeacon of Sallop, said: “Telford Christian Council would like to thank David for his work during the past 13 years. He has been a good asset to the church and community in Telford.”
