Club secures £7,000 grant for irrigation

A Telford club which has been running for more than 80 years has been awarded £7,000 grant funding.

Hadley United Services and Village Club has been given £7,239 by the SITA Trust Landfill Communities Fund to pay for an automatic water irrigation system.

The club, which was established in 1923 and has 800 members, will be installing the system into the club’s bowling green.

John Hughes, club secretary, said: “It is very good news. Obviously with times being as hard as they are at the moment this is something we would not have been able to afford for several years.”

Mr Hughes hopes the improvements will encourage new members to join the group.

The club applied to SITA Trust’s Enhancing Communities programme which supports community improvement projects.

Jools Mackin, communications manager at SITA Trust, said: “We aim to help improve community life by supporting projects which improve facilities.

“SITA Trust were delighted to offer to help this much loved community facility. We were touched by the tale of the club’s origins and impressed by how well-used it continues to be.”

The Club, originally formed in 1923 for the survivors of the Great War on land donated by local dignitaries and landowners. It is now open to the public and offers a range of activities including line dancing, darts and dominoes.

All activities are indoors except for the bowling green which is a well used facility attracting around 6,000 people per year.

The club estimates that more than 750 games were played in the last 12 months.
