Traders in St Georges facing closure could be given a helping hand by Oakengates Chamber of Commerce, which is looking to expand.
Shop owners in St Georges say they are desperate for more parking in St Georges and are calling for help claiming their shops could vanish if more spaces are not provided.
Louise Mcallister, owner of St Georges cafe, said: “Our customers have nowhere to park. A lot of people come here in the morning, park and get into another car and go to work.
“There is no disabled parking by the shops so the disabled have got to get someone to pick them up and drop them off.
“We desperately need a car park. It has definitely affected trade.”
Miss Pip Harding, owner of Greenways Farm Shop, said: “The way it is going the businesses are going to close. We are a village community and people want to be able to go to their local shops.
“We feel like St Georges has been forgotten.”
But Christine Orford, chairman of Oakengates Chamber of Commerce, said they were looking to extend their group to allow members of St Georges to join.
“The Oakengates Chamber is doing really well and any business who would like to join is welcome.
“We are interested in St Georges and trying to extend the Chamber there.
“We will hopefully be able to help them. We are looking at the constitution for them to join us.”
Telford & Wrekin Council’s head of Planning and Transport, Michael Barker, attended a recent meeting of St George’s Parish Council to hear people’s concerns.
A council spokesperson said: “While there are no current planning application’s to address parking issues in the area, we aim to work with the parish council to keep the situation under review.”
The next Oakengates Chamber meeting will be held on September 30 from 6.16pm at The Place Theatre in the town.
