A campaign group fighting plans for a coal mine in Telford has folded, just weeks before a government planning decision.
Chairman of the Friends of the Ercall group, Pat Judson, told The Journal that the group has disbanded after 18 months of campaigning against UK Coal plans to mine 900,000 tonnes of coal near Wellington.
Mr Judson said: “The Friends of the Ercall now cease to exist.
“My family and I have carried the group since last November but the majority of people deserted as the commitment was too much. Very few have been actively involved but my family were, my wife, daughter, cousin and Angela McClements.”
The group was set up at the beginning of 2008 and organised meetings and protest campaigns.
Mr Judson said health and financial issues were also reasons for ending the group.
“I fully realise we never had enough capital and most was from our own pockets.
“But we just can’t keep financing it.”
The collapse comes before a decision by the Secretary of State over mine plans, due to be announced next month.
Angela McClements, Arleston ward councillor and Friends member, said: “I am very sad to hear the Friends have decided to cease.
“Pat Judson in particular campaigned vigorously to get the council to carry out a health impact assessment. They were undoubtedly a strong and forceful group across the Wrekin.”
Mr Judson said he appreciated support given by Steve Hooker who ran the website and Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard.
“Mr Pritchard worked very hard to put the case before parliament and he is to be applauded.
“What we have done has been very taxing but it has been worth it.
“I appreciate the public for coming to meetings and protests.
“I am sad to see Friends of the Friends of Ercall go.”
Meanwhile Mr Pritchard said he has received a reply from Secretary of State, John Denham, for the Parliamentary Petition, with more than 500 signatures, opposing UK Coal plans.
He said: “I hope the Minister will realise there is overwhelming opposition to UK Coal’s plans.
“Minister’s now need to listen to local residents.
“I am grateful for all the hard work and support the Friends of Ercall have given for my campaign against the coal mining.”
