Sutton Hill projects win funding

Thousands of pounds have been awarded by lottery bosses to fund youth projects in Sutton Hill.

The Awards for All Lottery scheme has given £7,979 to Madeley Parish Council for their Smile on Sutton Hill Project.

The project has seen youngsters creating wildlife homes in Madeley Community Orchard for a range of habitats from frogs to ants.

The project is run by staff and volunteers from environmental charity Groundwork. It is funded by Madeley Parish Council and the Awards for All fund from the Big Lottery.

Stephen Cook, project leader, said: “The day at the orchard went down well with all involved.

“It was great to see how different generation’s were able to work together and achieve something tangible whilst also learning from each other as they went.

“The day ended with young people playing games on the field opposite the orchard before heading back to Sutton Hill satisfied they had done a good days work.”

John Taylor, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for the West Midlands, said: “I am delighted to see Lottery money being used to support young people on the Sutton Hill Estate.

“This grant will give these young people the opportunity to experience activities they would otherwise miss out on.

“The Big Lottery Fund is committed to making a difference to communities that are most in need and this grant will improve life for the younger generation on this Shropshire estate.”

Any youngster, over the age of 10, who lives in the Sutton Hill estate who would like to get involved can call Stephen at Groundwork on 0121 530 5500 for more information.
