Campaigners calling for the return of their post office have won backing from the leader of Telford & Wrekin Council.
Residents calling for the service to be brought back to Leegomery’s centre, after the last one was destroyed by fire four years ago, has gained support from Councillor Andrew Eade.
Leegomery is currently undergoing a £1.7 m regeneration project and Councillor Eade has revealed he will be writing to Royal Mail for the service to return to the area.
“We are determined that all the facilities and amenities that the local community used to benefit from will be restored and that includes a post office,” he said. “To that end, I will be writing to Royal Mail to stress in the strongest possible terms that a post office should be part of the new retail development.”
To boost the campaign residents, who have been circulating a paper petition, have now launched an online version in a bid to reach more people.
Mary Van Ristell, a resident promoting the petition, said they had received a lot of support.
She said: “We have got quite a few signatures. Even Apley Wood Primary School are supporting it. We also have the support from local businesses.”
Mrs Allyson Brown, head teacher of Apley Wood Primary School, said: “We believe that the return of a post office to Leegomery would be beneficial for parents, staff and pupils and would be logistically a lot more convenient.
“Although we would not formally sign the petition as a school, individual members of staff as well as a number of parents have signed up to support it and we hope that our views will be listened to.”
The online petition can be found on www.gopetition.co.uk/online/30753.html and Mrs Van Ristell hopes this will make it more accessible to people.
