Journal reporter steps over the edge

It’s not every day you get invited to take part in the ‘adrenalin-fuelled’ jump of a 50-metre building.

meeting-036.JPGSo when I was asked by Priorslee- based charity PDSA to take part in an abseil on Saturday, September 19, I had to say yes.

I am not really a fan of heights but they say that you must do something every day that scares you and so this was definitely my something.

Going up in the lift with my fellow jumpers I didn’t feel too nervous. sd3287159tj19abseil-1.jpg

In fact I felt quite excited as we put on our harnesses and were given instructions from the professional instructors.

I was to be the first person to take the plunge, the guinea pig if you will, and as I stepped up the ladder to the edge I was wondering if I really was as brave as I had first believed.

Leaning over the edge my legs turned to jelly and because I was first I had to stand there, with the ground so far below, while they taped ropes.

Finally it was time for my descent and with my legs and body straight I stepped over the edge despite my brain screaming at me ‘what are you doing you fool!’

Halfway down and I began to enjoy myself and felt like hanging around to look at the view.

But there were still four nervous jumpers above me waiting their turn so I carried on. Touching down on the hard ground, my legs still wobbly, I realised how much fun I had, and even wanted to go and do it again.

But instead I went for a hot chocolate.

The PDSA abseil saw 27 people take part and so far the charity have collected £4,000 for their cause.
