Businesses hit hard by Madeley’s regeneration

A ‘terrible’ loss of business is being blamed on Madeley’s multi-million pound transformation.

Traders in the town have said since regeneration work began they have noticed a decline in business.

Scott Vincent, partner of Wrekin Computers in Russell Square, said: “People are staying away; business has gone down.

“It’s the poorest month we have had since we  opened.

“You can really see a difference in business from before the regeneration work to now it is taking place.”

Gill Starr, owner of Madeley Pet Shop, also in Russell Square, said: “Business is terrible, it’s the worst time we have ever had and we have been open for 15 years.

“We seem to be getting nowhere at all, you should see what we have to put up with.”

The traders says there is now limited disabled access in some parts of town due to the work taking place.

Mrs Starr added: “No one consulted us about the plans; you try asking questions and no one will tell you anything.”

Susie Marshall, graduate surveyor of Savilles Estate Agents, said: “Madeley Malls are still open and trading. There has been some confusion as to whether or not they will remain open, but they are here to stay. “There are a number of vacant units for sale and to let at the moment and interest is pretty quiet.

“We are hoping that once the regeneration has been completed, trade will lift.”

Councillor Gill Green, ward member for Madeley, said: “Bowmer & Kirkland, site contractors, continue to work closely with all the traders to ensure it is business as usual in Madeley.

“This is a major development site and over the next six months Madeley will be transformed into a place with a more sustainable future.

“The construction of the through road taking place this winter is the most difficult time and I would ask all residents to support their traders during the final phases of this multi-million pound development.”

A demolition team began work in August to knock down the 1960s town centre shopping parade for a 4,380 sq ft Tesco store, 15 businesses, 16 homes, new access to the town library, car parking and other improvements.

The new shopping centre is scheduled to open to the public by April 2010.

Council officers have worked hard to deliver this scheme which should result in a renewed centre to restore Madeley’s local economy and contribute to its future success on the edge of the World Heritage Site.
