Roden plans are state of the art

Plans for a £5million state-of-the-art upgrade have been submitted by Roden dogs home.

Officials at Roden Dogs Trust Home,  have submitted the plans to Telford & Wrekin Council to transform the facilities, creating new jobs in the process

The plans will see the number of kennels decrease in a bid to create a calmer atmosphere for canines.

There will also be a new veterinary centre, state-of-the-art glass fronted kennels and a woodland area for dog walks.

Provision for dog training sessions and a meeting place for local community groups has also been included in the application along with a revamped reception area.

Louise Campbell, centre manager, said: “We are making the place smaller in terms of kennels.

“At the moment we have up to 200 dogs and are looking by the end at around 150 dogs. But there will be far better facilities with state-of-the-art kennels.

“There will be a veterinary suite for us to do our own operations. This will reduce the stress of dogs travelling to local vets to get operations done.

“We have got a beautiful site of 30 acres and we want to make a woodland walk area and nice seating for the people to sit with the dogs.

“There will be additional staff required for the veterinary centre and there will be  training facilities so hopefully there will be quite a few vacancies.”

It is thought the designs will be ‘ground-breaking’ because the site is planned to be carbon neutral where waste material is reused.

Miss Campbell said the centre is using world-renowned architects whose designs have been used in Eastern Europe.

“I think it will cost about £5m and it is all through fundraising,” said Miss Cambell.

If the planning application is successful building work will begin next spring/summer taking around 52 weeks to create.

“It will be a major development for the welfare of the dogs,” she said. “It won’t have a negative impact on homing dogs.”

Last year Roden re-homed 1,500 dogs from the centre and the Trust hopes to continue with these numbers in the future.
