GIG REVIEW: Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand, Scottish indie rockers, played at the Civic as part of their UK wide tour on Monday night, October 19.

The band has been around for a while now and the members have enough hits in their back catalogue to keep the crowd singing along.

Early singles such as Matinee and Take Me Out were always guaranteed to get people dancing and there was just the right balance of new songs and old favourites.

The gig was worth going to for the light show alone as a huge wall of tiles lit up to reveal different graphics and music videos.

A camera panned over the audience and the band projecting the images onto the screen to really make you feel part of the show.

Front man Alex Kapranos seemed genuinely pleased with the warm reception although I must confess I struggled to understand what he was saying between songs – it was either down to his accent or I’ve ruined my hearing from going to one too many gigs in my teen years.

Special praise must go to one of the band’s roadies who scaled the lighting rigs mid set to unhook a curtain which had got stuck over the light wall. His successful climb brought cheers from the crowd as he clambered safely back down to earth.

My only criticism of the night would be the encore, the band played four dance synth mixes which sounded like one note played over and over again.

People in the crowd started to leave and those that stayed exchanged bemused glances as we waiting for the band to play one last hit.

They didn’t, instead opting to walk off stage as the drummer carried on beating the drums over and over before getting up and following them out.

Apart from the slightly flat ending the lads put on a good show and are definitely worth a ticket.

The Civic as usual was a great setting with perfect acoustics for big name bands.
