A new lease of life for railway station

All three train stations in Telford could be given a new lease of life.

Network Rail unveiled plans last week to improve 240 stations in the Midlands as part of a five year, £3.25bn, programme of investment.

Telford & Wrekin Council officials revealed they have plans for Oakengates, Wellington and Telford   stations to receive a make over.

Councillor Steve Bentley, cabinet member for Environment, said: “Telford & Wrekin Council is involved in negotiations with both London Midland and Network Rail with a view to improving all three railway stations in the borough.

“We are currently putting together a joint bid with London Midland for investment in realtime information points at Oakengates Railway Station.”

London Midland’s officials have also revealed they are discussing plans to improve access and signage in Wellington.

Richard Lakin, a spokesperson for London Midland, said: “We are in discussions with the council to look at accessibility, signage and information systems.”

Councillor Bentley added “We are also investigating a pedestrian link bridge between Wellington railway station and Wellington bus station and a report will be going to the council’s cabinet on the viability of this.”

Dave Riley, president of Wellington Chamber of Commerce, said: “It is very good news. London Midland recognise the importance and viability to making improvements to Wellington train station.

“It is yet more recognition that Wellington’s regeneration is gaining momentum.”

Christopher Fry, Wellington Town Manager, also welcomed plans to improve the town.
