Spin off from town’s ‘ale taster’ success

The ancient role of ale tasting is to be resurrected all over the country after the success in Wellington.

Cornish Market Worlds in St Austell, Pool Market in Redruth and Luton’s Market in Bedfordshire have picked up on the craze for the 19th century position as they hunt for their own representatives.

Tim Ward, a spokesperson for Town and Country Markets, said: “Following the success of Wellington’s event the other markets are all up for it.

“It is boosting the profile of markets.”

The ale tasting job was said to be popular during medieval times and duties included visiting stalls and inns on market days and during the town’s fairs to make sure ales, beers and other produce on sale were of good quality.
