A group of students from Wrockwardine Wood Arts College are working with Oakengates Town Council to stage the switching on of the Christmas lights.
The town council has received around £25,000 to improve and increase their festive lights. They have added nine new cross-street decorations in Oxford Street, Market Street and New Street.
The 14 to 15 year old students, known as Cloud 15 Arts Event Management, have organised three hours of seasonal, family entertainment.
The switch-on is on Friday, November 27 from 3.30pm and there will be singing, carolling and entertainment at three different street venues in the town, as well as a special visit from Father Christmas.
At 5.30pm Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, stars of this year’s pantomime at The Place in Oakengates, will flick the switch to turn on the lights.
Wrockwardine Wood Arts College works closely with many junior school in the area, and there will be choirs and musicians from Wombridge, St Georges, Priorslee, Redhill and Queenswood primary schools at the event. The college’s own senior choir, rock bands and solo vocalists will also perform.
Meanwhile, the council has booked fairground rides, market stalls and seasonal refreshments to ensure Market Street is buzzing all afternoon and evening.
Sadie Lee, 14, from Trench and a spokesperson for Cloud 15 said: “We are very honoured to arrange this.”
Hannah Styles, 14 from Randlay, said: “By working on this project we can also pass a unit from our BTEC.”
Hilda Rhodes, Oakengates Mayor: “The youngsters from Wrockwadine Wood do an excellent job and I praise them highly.
“I look forward to seeing the new lights. I am sure the people of Oakengates will appreciate them.”
