Telford is home to two School Sports Partnerships, one based at Madeley Academy, which covers the South of Telford and the Newport schools and the other at The Phoenix School, which covers the North of Telford and the Wellington schools.
Each partnership is managed by a Partnership Development Manager (PDM).
The PDM leads a team of School Sport Co-ordinators (SSCo’s) who are based at each of the Secondary Schools in Telford and Wrekin.
Every primary school is attached to one of the secondary schools to create a family of schools and together they work to provide and promote sporting opportunities.
The Government hopes to achieve a five hour offer of sport or physical activity per week for every pupil aged 5-16 year olds.
In Telford 60 per cent of young people are taking part in three hours or more of sport and physical activity, this is compared to a national average of 50 per cent.
The Telford Schools Sports Partnerships provide opportunities to take part in a wide range of activities both on and off school sites; intra and inter school competitions and links to community sports clubs.
The Partnerships also focus a considerable amount of time on gifted and talented pupils, pupils with a disability and leadership and volunteering opportunities.
Since the partnerships began in 2005 sport in Telford has increased tenfold, just some of the successes include: increasing the number of young leaders providing the coaches for the future; increasing the number of young people being able to swim 25m; and increasing the number of after School Clubs by providing Sports Coaches.
